What is a Trend? The answer is rather simple. It’s a general direction in which something is developing or changing. The something I am referring to is fashion. In fashion we can look for these changes twice a year during Fashion week. For the two fashion seasons of the upcoming year, fall-winter & spring-summer, we can see what types of clothing the public will be buying and wearing. From color, shape, and texture we look to these collections for inspiration. Another place you can typically view what trends to look forward to would be the September and March issues of Fashion magazines. If you have no interest in viewing a fashion show, these magazines are a great resource to view upcoming trends.
Even if you are not able to afford a higher-end designer, many brands look to these trends to create affordable fashions that are sold everywhere. Some discount retailers like Target get established designers to design lines specifically for their store clientele.
Some classic trends that we see repeated throughout the years are items like the trench coat which never dies but goes dormant for a period and then reappears in full force. The European cut is a trend that is currently popular. This year during some of the international fashion weeks held around the world, we can see designers looking back in time for inspiration. The newsboy hat is present in a lot of collections, as well as the knickerbocker style which could be found in America during the 1930’s.
Trends are great and they should only be used as a guide in shaping your personal style. You should only take some elements from a particular style you might see during fashion week and incorporate it into clothing you already own. You can be conservative or you can be adventurous, but the most important advice we can give about trends is to be a leader and not a follower. Take inspiration from what you see and create your own trend.
