We are currently in the midst of Fashion Week occurring around the globe, and only a few days from the start of New York Fashion Week. This year for fashion week TheCuffLink has decided to follow a lot of the men’s designers showing their lines around the world. I decided to do some minor research into the history of what we now know as Fashion Week. Fashion week as we know it today serves as a way for Fashion Designers, Brands, and Fashion Houses to get their products on display for the media, buyers, and public to view and get ideas for what trends we will be seeing in the near future.
Fashion week can trace its roots to the showrooms of department stores and small boutiques around Paris and other fashionable cities during the late 19th century and early 20th century. The higher-end shows would occur in Paris. Americans during that time relied on the French for fashion inspiration. New York Fashion week was born in the early 1940’s during World War II when the majority of the American fashion industry could not make it to fashion week in Paris. Fashion publicist Eleanor Lambert organized a week called press week which would become recognized as the first New York Fashion Week.
This event was a turning point for the American fashion industry. This event allowed American fashion designers for the first time to be displayed in American homes thanks to magazines like Vogue. Until press week the focus was European designers and fashion houses. Fashion week is now a global endeavor with fashion capitals around the world participating.
This year Fashion Week started off in Milan, then it heads to Paris, then to New York City. One of the great things about fashion week is that it doesn’t just occur in the cities I’ve listed. Fashion Week occurs now in cities like Berlin and Shanghai. We’ve had spring/summer coverage of Fashion Week in Seoul, South Korea, and it even makes its way to Australia to exhibit the country’s growing fashion industry. Fashion is now global and TheCuffLink will keep you up to date with the latest trends in men’s fashion. Keep checking back for updates.
